Kyle Maynard is a speaker, author, and ESPY Award-winning (for Best Athlete With A Disability in 2004) mixed martial arts athlete, known for becoming the first quadruple amputee to climb Mount Kilimanjaro without the aid of prosthetics.
Although he was born with a rare condition known as congenital amputation, he decided to pursue involvement in sports, and achieved mind blowing results. He thrives on physical challenges and went on to become a champion wrestler, CrossFit Certified Instructor and gym owner, competitive MMA/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter, world record-setting weightlifter, and skilled mountaineer.
In 2012, he became the first quadruple amputee to ascend the Kilimanjaro without assistance, by crawling all 19,340 feet in just 10 days. In 2012, he was awarded his second ESPY for best male athlete with a disability for completing the climb.
In 2008, Maynard opened No Excuses Crossfit gym, a crossfit-intensive facility located in Georgia.
Oprah Winfrey called Kyle “one of the most inspiring young men you will ever hear about.” Arnold Schwarzenegger described him as “the real deal,” “a champion human,” and “one of the most inspiring people” he’s ever met.
His website is great, with an inspiring mantra which I love: FIND YOUR MOUNTAIN AND WE’LL CLIMB IT TOGETHER.
In 2005, he wrote the New York Times Bestselling autobiography, No Excuses: The True Story of a Congenital Amputee Who Became a Champion in Wrestling and in Life.
This is a great inspirational book about the perseverance of the human spirit.
This book will pump you up, touch your heart and soul – and will inspire you to always give your best shot and never procrastinate again, for any goals you have in life, whether fitness related or any other.
I almost cried several times whilst reading this book. Not because it’s sad but because of how positive and powerful it is beyond challenges and adversity. I also love the way in which Kyle makes his story a tribute not only to his own tenacity but also to that of his family, friends and coaches.
The book has a positive message for anyone at any level of life.
No Excuses is one of the best autobiographies I’ve ever read.
I love this extract where Kyle says: “Even though I was born with much shorter limbs than the average person, I know I was not born to be an inferior individual, I was born to succeed, not to allow physical limitations to stand in the way of my dreams.”
